Due to the poverty and marginalisation caused by years of civil war, many underage girls continue to be forced into prostitution on the outskirts of Abidjan. In 2008, Soleterre began intervening in Port Bouet, a shantytown near the port of Abidjan, and setting of an environmental disaster caused by a Dutch ship on 19 August 2006, when it off-loaded and secretly buried its load of toxic waste in nineteen different locations around the city. Due to the toxic fumes released by the waste, ten people died and thousands more needed medical treatment. Because of the environmental pollution, many, many people still need medical assistance, which they cannot afford. Against the backdrop of this serious economic, social and medical emergency, Soleterre's project involves the establishment of a centre to house, treat, train and socially reintegrate young victims of the conflict, ex-prostitutes, orphans and marginalised girls. Interventions also include health information and awareness campaigns for women from the local communities.
