Soleterre's intervention in El Salvador aims to prevent and reduce the rate of dropping out of school in rural areas. Because of the conditions of extreme poverty in which families in Canton Cedro live, parents have to work away from home for many hours a day, leaving the children alone at home. Not only are many children unable to attend kindergarten and the preparatory pre-school, but they often have to help their parents working in the fields. When they get to primary school, most of them cannot read or write. Their performance is poor, and there is a high risk of dropping out. Soleterre's support in Canton Cedro makes several activities possible: - literacy and recreational activities for pupils, including the supply of materials for school and play; - provision of extra food for 350 children attending the kindergarten and primary school in the rural community of Canton Cedro - awareness-raising activities to improve the educational career of the children and their families.
